Mistakes to Avoid When Learning Italian

Learning how to speak Italian can be a great experience. Once the learning process is over you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment knowing that you can speak a beautiful new language.

It’s getting through the learning process to get to the end result that’s tough. To make the process a little easier, here are some common mistakes that beginners make when learning Italian and how you can avoid them.

One of the biggest mistakes many people make when learning Italian is assuming the meaning of a word. You need to remember that just because a word sounds the same in your language, it doesn’t necessarily mean the same in Italian.

Many times words sound very similar but have completely opposite meanings. If you want to avoid unnecessary embarrassment, you should take the time to learn proper vocabulary of the Italian language.

Another assumption you might make when you first start speaking Italian is always following the sentence order and structure of your current language. Many languages follow their own order or structure which may be different than you’re used to.

Make sure you learn how to properly put sentences together in Italian. Otherwise, you won’t ever be able to sound natural when speaking.

A common mistake you may be tempted to make, especially at the beginning, is ignoring pronunciation. It can be difficult to know how to pronounce words in Italian if you’re not experienced with the language.

The only way to really know how to pronounce the words is to hear them spoken. While you may be learning out of books or guides, you should try to get some audio instruction. You’ll get more familiar with how words and sentences sound, so you can say them correctly.

With all of this talk about mistakes, it can be easy to just forget learning all together. You can’t let the fear of making mistakes keep you from learning. Italian is a beautiful language, and you’ll love the accomplishment you feel after learning it. You’re not going to be perfect at the beginning.

You have to continually study and practice if you want to get it right. Remember that many people make mistakes in their own language, so don’t feel bad about it when you’re learning a completely new language.

If you keep these common mistakes in mind, it will be easier to avoid them. Of course you won’t be able to avoid all mistakes, but that’s fine. No matter how many mistakes you make, if you keep on practicing, you’ll speak fluent Italian before you know it.
